In her new movie Dangerous Waters, Odeya Rush ventures into the action genre. She explores themes of suspense and shock and expands upon her artistic work. We talk about the filming experience, fashion, and character development!

LG: Congratulations on Dangerous Waters! How was the filming experience?
OR: The experience was life changing. We filmed in the Dominican Republic, on a boat, in the water. I did tactical training, fight training, I was truly a different person after this shoot. Probably a cooler one.

LG: How was working alongside Ray Liotta? What are some lessons you feel like you took away from the experience?
OR: Ray is the most generous actor I’ve ever worked with. Ray gave me more on my coverage than he gave himself. That’s the way he was, selfless, generous, giving and ego free. We all need to be more like Ray.

LG: How has it been working on an action-thriller?
OR: Surprisingly fun. I didn’t know I had it in me, I didn’t know I would enjoy the action scenes so much, it was a good time. I felt like I was in a video game.
LG: Do you prefer thrillers compared to other genres? How does it compare?
OR: I love thrillers. I love plot twists, Good Time is one of my favorite movies. I don’t discriminate though, I love all movies equally. If it’s good it’s good ya know?

LG: How did you go about developing your character? Was your approach different for this movie compared to your previous works?
OR: I did a lot of work on Rose’s background, on who her parents are and how that shaped her. I also worked on Rose’s body language. She moves differently to me, she has a sternness and agility that I really worked on developing through my fight training. What was different for me compared to my previous roles was the physicality that Rose carries and the amount of physical training I did.

LG: You previously worked on Umma, a supernatural horror film. How did that experience compare to your work on Dangerous Waters?
OR: Dangerous Waters really differed from Umma cause in Umma I only really took part in the realistic story and less in the surreal moments.

LG: What are other genres you gravitate towards? Are there any other genres you’d like to explore?
OR: I love comedy. A lot of my favorite movies come from Seth Rogan, Sacha Baron Cohen. so I would love to be a part of their world one day.
LG: How do you feel that fashion contributes to developing your characters?
OR: Fashion makes a huge contribution to the way my characters move, interact, and see themselves in the world. In Dangerous Waters for example, it was really important for me to not make Rose too sexy and keep her tomboy aesthetic. Her point of view needed to be clear and clothes are a great way to solidify that.

LG: What do you look for in a project when deciding on working on it?
OR: I look at the script and the filmmakers. I worry too much about the size of a role, that’s never been my approach. I look for what message am I putting out, what I could learn and what I could stand behind and be proud of.
