You like to dive into different artistic disciplines: music, acting, photography, film. How do you navigate being a multi-hyphenate creative? How do you find your focus?

I don’t find my focus, usually. Being a multi-hyphenate means submitting to distraction, or what I think of as “the call.” It’s a constant state of listening to the muses, which means I’m often being grabbed and pulled in different directions by my own imagination. As for juggling them all – deadlines help me stay focused on specific projects at a time.

You moved to Asheville, North Carolina back in 2018 to nurture your creativity outside a major city. What made you choose Asheville in particular and what lessons have you learned living there thus far? I chose Asheville because I was following the call, so to speak. I’ve learned the importance of surrounding yourself with people who don’t work in the creative or entertainment industries – to have a diverse group. I’ve learned the importance of proximity to nature to my artistic process. I’ve learned how to say no to going to the party. I’ve learned that we all need people a little more than we think.

You self-directed Live From Blackalachia there back in 2020. What do you enjoy the most about directing films?

I think if you had asked me this in 2020 I would have said nothing, ha. Directing, for me, is like scratching an existential itch … the pleasure is derived from a sense of relief. But now that I’ve had experience acting I realize what I love most about directing is a total (and totalitarian) sense of control. It’s such a blessing to have a vision and then get to see it all the way through. It’s also painful and painstaking, and I take the privilege of directing very seriously – which is why it’s difficult to enjoy it sometimes. But at the end when I look back at what I’ve made, the sense of pride in “having made” is unparalleled.

Can you share a bit about how you started as a recording artist? What inspires the soundscapes you create?

Well, I started writing songs when I was around 12 years old. I would take the bus to school in Accra, Ghana, and sit in the very back corner and write songs in my notebook. Then I started making beats on a hand-me-down computer around the age of 14. Mostly electronic and hip-hop beats on weekends and after school. I didn’t start recording songs I had written until many years later though, when I graduated from college and was playing bar gigs around Los Angeles. I soon became popular around Los Angeles as a new artist with a dynamic live show.

The recording part was a little slower for me as I knew I wanted a unique and dream-like sound. The soundscapes are largely inspired by soul music, dreams, a sense of living life in the margins. I like sounds that invoke the spirit.

Tell us about your experience working with Lily-Rose Depp.

She is an absolute angel and a fearless leader. One of the hardest workers I’ve had the pleasure of collaborating with.

What roles do you see yourself playing in the future?

I want to continue to play Black men who go against the grain, who portray a type of masculinity that feels refreshing or niche. I want to explore more emotional desolation on screen.

What brands/designers do you like to wear daily?

Right now I am obsessed with a Swedish brand called Our Legacy. I like clothes that look elegant but have very comfortable materials, especially because I grew up in hot environments. I also love to wear the Moroccan brand Marrakshi Life.

What are you doing when you’re not working on one of your projects?

I’m always working on a project. It doesn’t always feel like I’m “working” because when something starts to feel too much like a job I like to switch mediums and do something that feels fun, like edit photos. Apart from work though, I really enjoy cooking, watching movies, reading, and frolicking in nature.
