Material Art Fair 2024

Overview by Bryan Munguia

This year, Material Art Fair in Mexico City had a lot to celebrate. For one, it marks the fair’s ten-year
anniversary, a testament to the forward-thinking vision of its founder and director, Brett Schultz. Beyond mere
longevity, the fair symbolizes a decade-long convergence of commercial acumen and curatorial insight,
responsible for the vibrant cultural advancement of emerging contemporary art in the region.

At its core, Material Art Fair serves as a dynamic hub for cultural exchange and artistic discovery. The
revamped Proyectos section, in particular, highlights the fair’s dedication to fostering emerging talent from
Mexico while developing other initiatives that provide a platform for international exhibitors to engage with the
local cultural milieu. It’s an environment where the local and global can intersect, sparking meaningful dialogue
that transcends a typical commercial fair experience.

For those in the know, Material has rightfully earned its reputation as the go-to destination for witnessing
genuine artistic relevance during Mexico City’s Art Week. Unlike conventional fairs driven mostly by profit,
Material remains steadfast in its commitment to promoting and disseminating contemporary art on both a local
and global scale. By curating its exhibitors, the fair ensures an authentic experience that goes beyond the
traditional pageantry of art fairs, prioritizing artistic integrity from its exhibitors aside from mere capital gains.
