Interview Juan Marco Torres

Los Angeles singer, songwriter, and guitarist Huddy introduced himself with the single 21st Century Vampire back in 2021 and since then has continued to establish himself as a must-see act in the punk rock scene. Having worked with artists Tyson Ritter and Travis Barker, Huddy made his festival debut recently in Las Vegas and released his single Slowly Healing early this year. We sat down with the recording artist to talk about this healing process, some of his favorite Dior looks, and some of the experiences that have marked him and influenced his writing.

What’s inspiring you these days?

I’ve been very inspired by the new music I’ve found between traveling and just spending time playing music with the people that I care about in my life. It feels like you know a piece of somebody based on what they listen to. Being super self-aware to the music around me has opened my pallet for inspirations to new ideas and material. You can really pull it from anywhere, from a restaurant to short 10-minute car rides.

Can you share what made you write your single Slowly Healing? It’s a different direction from the Huddy we’re used to.

I wanted to make a song that represented the way I was feeling in the moment. I’m healing in a lot of ways and expressing the way I feel on the day I walk into a studio has been really important and helpful for my writing process and in being more honest.

You had your festival debut last year in Las Vegas. What was that like?

When We Were Young was such a huge turning point for my confidence and understanding of the world of artists around me. I met so many amazing artists that I’ve looked up to for years. I also met some good friends of mine like Palaye Royale, who I worked on an insane record with after the festival. I also cried seeing Pierce the Veil live for the first time.

How does healing look for you?

Healing is a process that started for me after pushing away my feelings for so long. I was really unwell for a while. I didn’t leave the house or eat much and after coming to terms with my feelings, after months of feeling bad for myself, I began to heal and start to reconnect with my friends and my ambitions and started to work on myself again.

Your All The Things I Hate About You single talks about heartbreak and betrayal. Can you tell us about this experience and how you came back from it?

I wrote All The Things I Hate About You last summer when I was really trying to figure out who I was as an artist shortly after rebranding to ‘Huddy’. I really want to be more vulnerable in my music and this was just the start of that realization for me.

What do you enjoy the most about your creative process?

I enjoy getting to know the people I work with as much as they enjoy getting to know me. It makes for great writing material to share with other people my life experiences and also hearing about their lives.

Who’s an artist you’d love to work with and why?

I’ve always wanted to work with Slash from Guns N’ Roses. Not only is he a Hudson, but he was mine and my dad’s favorite character growing up in Guitar Hero. He was the first rockstar that I looked up to.

Tell us about some of your favorite Dior looks.

My favorite look that I’ve worn from Dior was the suit from their recent show in Paris. I had this two-toned gray and black suit with a white undershirt, the most bedazzled dress shoes, and a unique hat on top. The show was slow and the music was all strings. I felt like a super villain.

What are some of your favorite spots to hang in LA?

My favorite spot in LA is my house. I don’t really leave it much other than to go to Jon & Vinny’s or the studio.
