Interview by Stella Hofferman

Chance Perdomo is magnetic on and off-screen–pun intended. The scene-stealing Brit steps into his first leading role in a television series in Gen V, the spin-off of beloved Amazon Prime show The Boys, as Andre Anderson. He’s a metal-bending, magnet-manipulating student at Godolkin University–a highly-respected institution for the best and brightest superheroes in the country–where he must weather the high expectations placed upon him from his superiors and his father. Perdomo has garnered praise for his charismatic performance as Ambrose Spelling in Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, and received a BAFTA nomination in 2018 for his breakout role in BBC’s Killed by my Debt.

Following the end of Perdomo’s shining first season as a leading-man, the 27-year-old actor discusses superheroes, and the future of both Gen V and his promising career.

What is a genre you’d like to experiment with in the future?

With the likes of John Wick, Extraction, The Fast and the Furious, and Mission Impossible, I’m excited that we’ve seen a resurgence of the no-holds-barred, high-octane action franchise akin to that of Stallone and Schwarzenegger’s heyday. As a fan of film and as an artist who has been fortunate enough to work on sets of all sizes, I recognize the work ethic, extreme level of detail, and practical hands-on approach that is required to deliver at the highest level. It demands mental and physical focus, dropping your ego, being a team player, and often facing your fears to rise to the occasion. It’s a space I am excited to explore more as I’ve expanded my skill-set.

As we approach 2024, do you have any goals that you wish to achieve in the new year?

I can’t go into detail, but I have a few projects in development that I’m excited about, and I’m enjoying learning and assisting as they are packaged together for the shopping process. Personally, I’m looking forward to setting roots & becoming a homeowner.

Who were your favorite superheroes growing up?

Fictional superheroes would have to be Batman and the anime character Naruto Uzumaki…A real-life superhero would have to be Tom Cruise.

What was it like going from a fan of The Boys to entering the universe as a lead character in the spinoff series?

The universe certainly has a good sense of humour. It’s been both a satisfying and surreal experience. I’m very happy with what we were able to bring to audiences and how it’s been received. To be honest, I still haven’t quite allowed myself to process it all. It usually takes me a good year after something is released to the public to really start taking it in. I put it aside until there’s a good deal of calm to let it happen. Usually with a cigar and some good music.

Did you undergo any training for your role in Gen V?

There was a period of time that I lived in Equinox. Lots of heavy weight training. Compound exercises like deadlifts and Zercher squats followed by calisthenics.

Out of all of the Supes in Gen V, whose powers would you most like to have?

Cate’s is a pretty damn good one to have–you’d just have to learn to watch what you say. If the room for error is too big with that one, I’d say Golden Boy’s; no winter would be too cold, and I could fly wherever I wanted.

In the season finale of Gen V, your character, Andre, finds himself in a strange place (quite literally, but also in his relationship with his father and fellow student Cate). Which aspects of his character are you most excited to potentially explore in season two?

I’m excited for Andre to explore optimal use of his powers, now knowing what it can do to him. He’s a slacker, but he’s intelligent, and the road ahead demands he figure it out.  In one sense, the burden of resentment and his father’s shadow has been alleviated, and in another, the burden of deciding what kind of hero and man he truly seeks to be begins to come to a head. I’m excited to really flesh out that emotional journey for him….and possibly kick some ass on the way there.
