Kim Han-bin, known by his stage name B.I, tells us “I childishly play with the idea nowadays of having all gain with no pain,” and while he knows that is a naive thought, his upcoming album project, LOVE OR LOVED, Pt.1, seems to exist somewhere within this concept. In the album, it is as if each track portrays love as it exists in the vacuum of the song’s vivid atmosphere. B.I creates a universe in the album that flows seamlessly together on a breeze traveling from one atmosphere enveloped in the sun’s halo wrapped around a tangerine sky, to another of crisp cotton sheets with sharp corners that sprawl up to a mountain’s peak. There is an ephemeral beauty to the album, like the red rose in flames on the album’s cover, or like the sweet splash of a tangerine on your tongue as teeth pierce its skin. In his design collaboration with Ojeito, B.I emphasizes “sophistication within simplicity,” an ideal that he carries into this album. While there’s certainly a youthful simplicity to the album, there’s a sophistication in its tailoring of sound and production to eliminate excess, in creating a feeling through lyrics, and in choosing to release the album in two parts to better express the narrative. As much as there is a freshness to the album’s first part, there seems to be a similar freshness to B.I as he looks forward to a boundless level of creativity with his 131 team. In our interview with him, he talks about child-like joy, his fans, and LOVE OR LOVED, Pt.1, which will be released on November 18, 2022!

LOVE OR LOVED [L.O.L] Part 1 focuses on different narratives surrounding love like dangerous love, fleeting love, and youthful love. Each song creates such a vivid atmosphere. If you could make a home in one atmosphere that one of the songs creates, which would you choose and why?

Hmm, that’s a tough question to answer. For me, I would pick TANGERINE as the basis and inspiration to build a house. It will have the most mesmerizing view of the sunset one can have on earth.

Your “BINBONG” light stick came out this summer and is reminding fans of Bing Bong from Inside Out! Since Bing Bong represents the special memories of a fading childhood, what childhood memories or feelings do you want to hold on to the most?

Rather than a specific memory in time, I would like to hold on close to the state of mind and being from my younger days – full of curiosity, warmheartedness, filled with pure confidence that I could become whoever I wanted to be, and boundless imagination.

Recently, when have you felt the most youthful joy?

Playing basketball, I believe. I’m still a beginner at it, but when I played a 3-on-3 game recently, I realized how exciting the sport is and how it can get my heart racing.

Your fans are called IDs since you say you and your fans build your identities together. How do you feel like your fans have shaped your identity, personally and professionally?

They are a huge reason why I’ve decided to make music again. They are also the biggest motivator to keep me going through the struggles that life can bring. Not to mention, they inspire me to work harder at everything I do. The two go hand in hand and cannot exist without one another.

You have said before that you know that there is no such thing as 100% perfect or 100% finished. Does this thought affect you when you are creating your music and deciding when you are ready for it to be released?

Not significantly. I still believe there is no such thing as 100%. I just give my best to get as close to it as possible.

You often say that one of the many inspirations for your music is comic books, and one of your favorites is Fullmetal Alchemist. The comic focuses on the idea that to earn something you have to give something else up. Do you relate to this idea?

Exchange of equivalents. It is true to a certain degree. If you want to achieve something, there is a price to be paid. I do admit I childishly play with the idea nowadays of having all gain with no pain. But I quickly snap back to reality and do my best.

On the comic book theme, would you describe love as more of a “hero” or an “anti-hero?” Why?

In comic books, love is mostly portrayed as the hero. But love is more inclusive and vaster than that.

In terms of being loved, is there a difference to you in being loved as B.I versus being loved as Kim Han-bin?

I do not feel any difference between the two. Perhaps because my fans often call me Kim Han-bin, so I feel loved in both ways.

Speaking of B.I versus Kim Han-bin, when you perform on stage you seem like a completely different person! I love watching your “BTBT” performances. How do you think you change when you’re on stage connecting with IDs/fans?

I try to be more confident and professional. I focus all my attention on giving the audience the very best.

I love your “pieces of love” collaboration with Ojeito, especially chapter 3 inspired by “Tangerine.” Can you tell us a little bit more about working on this collaboration?

“Tangerine” is one of the songs that is in my album LOVE OR LOVED. I don’t want to spoil the concept too much, but I wanted to find a fun balance between my ideas regarding my music and fashion. I wanted to keep the collaboration to follow the mantra “sophistication within simplicity” Working with Ojeito who also collaborated with some of my favorite brands like Futura Labs, Union La, and Clot really was the launch of my journey as a designer as well. What I can tell you though is that I’m only getting started.

Thank you for the interview! What can we look forward to in the future from you and 131 in general?

Our team overall is very creative. We’re always overflowing with ideas and chasing big dreams. I truly believe we will give birth to a whole lot of new projects with this synergic effect. We’re constantly seeking uniqueness and originality, as it is our genuine hope to provide fresh inspiration to the world not only musically but culturally as well.
