Laura Donnelly takes the lead in the new HBO Series, “The Nevers.” Brought on by Nina Gold, she acts as one of the touched in the magical-realistic world created by the network. Donnelly, who you might recognize from the Starz series “Outlander,” talks to ContentMode about her instant chemistry with co-star Ann Skelly, COVID-19’s effect on set, and her love for theatre.

AK: We are a third of the way through the year, so I just want to start by asking how 2021 is going for you.
LD: Like everyone, lockdown has begun to take its toll and I just want to get back to normal life, so this first part of the year has felt a bit like treading water, waiting and looking forward. It has been wonderful to finally get the show out and to be able to promote and talk about it – it’s been a very long journey to this point and I’m incredibly proud of The Nevers. Most of all I just can’t wait to get back to filming it.

AK: Until now, you were probably best known in television for your role as Jenny Fraser in “Outlander.” What was your time like on this show? How do you look back on it?
LD: I had a wonderful time filming Outlander – it’s a special show to be a part of. I studied in Glasgow and I miss it so getting to stay up there during filming always felt like coming home. Especially as several of the cast are old friends of mine. The remarkable thing to me about Outlander is I never felt I was that big a part of it – I would usually only be filming for a few weeks each season – but Jenny as a character seemed to make a big impact despite not a lot of screen time. I think that speaks to the strength of the writing and storytelling as well as the passion of the brilliant fans. I’m proud to be even a small part of a show that inspires such devotion from its viewers.

AK: No stranger to theatre either, you starred alongside Hugh Jackman in “The River” and most recently in the Broadway and West End productions of “The Ferryman,” for which you were nominated for a Tony and won the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Actress. What have you learned from stage performance that you have carried over to your screen career? How does working on screen and stage compare? Do you have a preference?
LD: I think most of what carries from stage to screen is subconscious and I don’t like to analyse it too much. I guess a sense of relaxation in the moment, so that you can be available to whatever comes your way and really listen and pay attention is the main thing I’ve been able to exercise most on stage. One moment follows on from the next so you have to be open to where that takes you. If you clam up on stage and become rigid you can quickly find yourself stuck or lost so relaxation is very important. I also think theatre actors tend to approach a character in a more holistic way when considering how to physically inhabit a character. On stage you are in full view of the audience at all times from start to finish and so you have to find ways to make the character a whole being rather than focus on moments. I’ve met incredible film actors who transfer to stage and suddenly don’t know what to do with their body because they aren’t used to that. I like the differences between the two forms and they do require different skill sets so I’m determined to keep doing both, but if I were forced to choose I would have to say theatre.

AK: How did your journey with “The Nevers” begin? How did you become involved in the project? What did you like about the idea of playing Amalia True?
LD: I had first heard about The Nevers through the casting director, Nina Gold. Anything Nina casts is worth paying attention to because she chooses wonderful projects. Also knowing it was HBO peaked my interest because I associate HBO with the highest quality shows. However I was a little reticent as the one line description of the show didn’t sound like my kind of thing. I then met with Joss though, and through the course of a long meeting he told me all about the character, the world he was building and the entire story as he envisioned it. In that moment I realised that this was so much more vast, complex and layered than anything I could have imagined and that it would be something truly original.

AK: Your character, Amalia True, is quite different from Ann Skelly’s Penance Adair, but they complement each other perfectly. How would you compare your on-screen relationship with your real-life relationship?
LD: I think the relationship between Amalia and Penance is the heart of the show and so it was something that Ann and I definitely wanted to get right. But often chemistry between two actors is the one thing that can’t be forced or faked so we both feel very lucky to have been cast opposite one another. I don’t know whether we clicked so quickly because we were channeling our characters or whether our characters on screen just reflect how we are together but I’d say our personal dynamic is not dissimilar to that of Penance and Amalia. Ann is such a warm, funny person and I immediately knew that I could trust her. It’s so easy to act in scenes with her because she is open and honest and generous as an actor and a person. I think it helps that we’re both Irish too.

AK: Amalia is one of the touched, allowing her to see small moments from the future. How does this ability hinder her life? How could it benefit her?
LD: I think Amalia’s turn is mostly a hindrance to her. It throws her out of time and out of her situation and is quite distressing while often not being particularly useful. But it does give her hints that she can go on to help her find out how to navigate her world. I think as time goes on she may find a way to gain some control over the ripplings, or she’ll at least have to figure out what the implications are of following/not following her visions, but for now she’s kind of at their mercy.

AK: Filming was disrupted due to COVID-19 and so the first season has been split into two parts. How do you feel about leaving the story at this point?
LD: It’s a shame that we don’t get to tell our whole story at this point but we’re incredibly fortunate that episode 6 actually works as a natural break in the narrative. There are a lot of questions answered by the end of six and it both wraps up a lot of the story and blows it apart at the same time, so I think the audience will be left satisfied but hungry for more.

AK: With filming commencing for ‘part 2’ soon, what are you most looking forward to?
LD: Apart from getting back to work with all of the cast and the vast majority of our crew, who have been amazing through the first half of filming, I’m most looking forward to seeing what our new showrunner, Phillippa Goslett has for us. She is taking the story in entirely her own direction and I’ve already heard some wonderful ideas about the emotional arcs of the characters. It’s exciting to have a woman telling this story, because it is largely about women. And Phillippa is very passionate about many of the issues we are dealing with in the story so I know she’ll have a lot to say.

AK: What do you have in store for the near future? Should we expect to see you on stage again soon..?
LD: I’d love to get back to theatre as soon as possible. If it hadn’t been for the pandemic I certainly would have aimed to have done some this year. But currently I’m preparing to start back on season 1b of The Nevers and that will take up the rest of this year so hopefully in 2022 I’ll be back on stage.
