Interview by Tessa Swantek

Grace Van Patten, American actor, has been immersed in the bright lights of the entertainment industry since she was a child. Her acting debut was on The Sopranos when she was only 8 years old where her passion for acting ignited like a fire that has only spread as she’s gotten older. While Van Patten’s career has soared into the clouds over the past few years, she describes her most recent roles as “broken bird” characters. In Nine Perfect Strangers, she plays Zoe Marconi, whose tragic reason for her family’s stay at the self-improvement resort underscores much of the series. Similarly, in her upcoming film MAYDAY, she stars as Ana, who, like Zoe, finds herself in a sinister location masked by beauty. Ana’s arrival to this location, surrounded by several women, also comes out of tragedy. Van Patten’s performances are impressive, to say the very least, as her characters’ emotions radiate through the screen to tell stories of unimaginable pain and strength (as evidenced through her newly found swimming muscles that she tells us developed as she filmed MAYDAY!). Van Patten tells us about her passion for acting, her book club as she prepared for her role in Nine Perfect Strangers, her experience filming in Croatia’s blue waters for MAYDAY, and her upcoming not so broken bird roles!

Your debut acting role was in The Sopranos, and you have said that watching James Gandolfini on set ignited your passion for acting. Passion, of course, is often reignited and changes as you get older. What are some other moments that have confirmed your passion for acting, and has it changed?

To feel passionate about something is truly one of life’s greatest pleasures, and I feel so lucky that my passion for acting was sparked at such a young age. Being on the set of The Sopranos and watching the most incredible artists at work definitely ignited a deep love, respect, and curiosity for the art. I feel like since then, the passion has only grown. Art is limitless and that’s what makes it so thrilling- there is always more to explore and discover and create. Whenever I’m inspired by a performance or an idea is when my love for it all gets deeper and new doors become unlocked.

In other interviews you have expressed a dream to produce, write, and direct in the future. What inspirations would you pull from?

Yes, I’d love to try it all! I am so in awe of people who are brave enough to put their hearts into multiple facets in order to make the art they want to make. Michaela Coel’s I May Destroy You is a prime example of that. She poured her blood, sweat and tears into that and made something so beautiful and truthful and personal.

Other than acting, what are you most passionate about?

 Self-Checkout

You said in another interview that you created a book club with your friends to read Liane Moriarty’s Nine Perfect Strangers after being cast as Zoe. Did your friends make any helpful comments when reading that helped you in your portrayal? What did you find most interesting about Zoe when reading the book and script?

Yes! That book club was amazing for many reasons. During quarantine, I wasn’t in the same place as many of my closest friends, so it made me very happy to see their cute faces for our weekly zooms. They are all so smart and had such great insight into the story and characters, so talking it through with them was very helpful. They were a huge part of the journey and their excitement and support only added to the thrill of it all.

I found Zoe’s desperation to connect, not only with her family but with the world, very intriguing. She is a broken bird when you first meet her, but her journey to finding her strength and reconnecting was something so beautiful to read and then bring to life.

If you were to go to a resort for self-improvement (hopefully not Tranquillum), what would be your improvement goal?

To stop worrying and fearing things that are out of my control.

Shifting to your leading role as Ana in MAYDAY, which will be released October 1, 2021, how would you describe Ana’s internal monologue?

Speaking of broken birds, man, I guess I have a type. Ana, similar to Zoe, in a way needs to be brought back to life. She’s been through the wringer and is close to giving up. She is in desperate need of finding her inner strength and power to go on.

Both Nine Perfect Strangers and MAYDAY are very dependent on world building to create an unsettling atmosphere. In MAYDAY in particular, you shot in Croatia. At what point in filming did you feel most a part of the fictional world?

The first time I set foot on the submarine, I was immediately transported. The insanely talented team that built it from scratch did an unbelievable job and it put us all right into the world. It’s worth watching just to see the submarine alone!

A lot of scenes in MAYDAY are very visually attractive and artistic. Without giving much away, what scene was your favorite visually, and what scene was your favorite to film?

Karen [Cinorre] had a vision, and she put it right on the screen. Every shot was so thought out and specific to the tone and world we were living in. I love the visual of all the girls in tubes sprawled out, floating in that beautiful blue water that doesn’t exist outside of Croatia. I loved filming all of the water scenes as well, I’m obsessed with the ocean, and if given the opportunity, I will jump in any body of water. So, shooting this movie was magical, and I think I may have even gotten some nice swimming muscles out of it!

Similar to Nine Perfect Strangers, you worked with an intimate group when filming MAYDAY. Do you have any behind the scenes stories relative to working with Mia Goth, Havana Rose Liu, and Soko?

It was such a special group of smart, beautiful, badass women. We had a really beautiful table- read our first day together and everyone went around and shared their “stories.” The vulnerability of everyone was so powerful and inspiring, there was a sisterhood that formed instantly.

When do you feel most beautiful?

When I’m making the people I love happy.

You are set to star in the upcoming TV series Tell Me Lies. Can you tell us anything about this, and what can we look forward to from you next?

Get ready y’all. It’s sexy. It’s fun. It’s heartbreaking. It’s thrilling. It’s quite a wild ride, and everyone will be able to relate.
