You’re originally from Dublin. Tell me what it was like growing up in Ireland. What’s the one thing from home you miss the most?

Mainly, I miss the people. But the potatoes are also really, really good.

What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?

Aim high. If you’re lucky, you might get half way there.

You moved to New York at age 18 to attend Tisch School of the Arts and later received a degree at NYU. Tell me about your decision to receive schooling in the states and why you decided to call Brooklyn your home.

I really wanted to study theatre. I love acting but I didn’t want to just move to LA, get an agent and wing it. I really respect the actors that study and continue to study throughout their careers. I think you can have a lot of talent and luck but if you’re not serious, it’s not going to last.  Tisch was the only school I wanted to go to. It has a great drama program and obviously it’s in the greatest city in the world.. It was also the only school that my parents let me apply to, so, if I didn’t get in, I was fucked.

What drew you to acting?

I honestly can’t tell you why I like acting. For a long time I really didn’t want to do it, I thought it was ridiculous. It’s so lonely and unsettling. Having a career in Hollywood is like having a really bad boyfriend. You love him so much but he’s totally cheating on you. There are times when I desperately want to quit and become a kindergarten teacher. But it takes one trip to the movies and I’m sucked right back in. Because I really love storytelling, I really love movie making and I’ll always want to be a part of it. I’d say most actors feel the same.

Tell me about one performance that inspires your own acting method.

Honestly, I love comedy more than drama. So I would say any performance that’s made me laugh tears. Colin Farrell in In Bruges. He’s so heartbreaking and so funny. It’s so perfectly Irish. And Goldie Hawn in anything. Even her Instagram videos. I am so inspired by her Instagram videos.

You’ve played a diverse set of roles already as a young actress. What’s been the most challenge character to prepare for?

I would say the first big movie I got was the most challenging to prepare for because I was heading into completely unknown territory. I booked This Must Be The Place in the summer after my first year at Tisch. I was doing scenes with Sean Penn and Frances McDormand. I was 18 and terrified! No job has scared me more than that.

Would you consider any of your roles as being pivotal in the development of your career? If so, tell me what made this role different and what it taught you.

I would say The Knick was probably the most pivotal moment in my career because I got to work with Soderbergh for two straight seasons. The best people in this business love his work and so they were all watching the show. It opened a lot of doors for me. And my character started off so naive, and then she turned into such a tyrant. I really got to play the whole spectrum. It was an actor’s dream.

Working on big productions with award-winning actors (Clive Owen and Tom Hanks) and directors (Steven Spielberg and Steven Soderbergh) is nothing new for you. Who’s been your favorite individual to work with and why?

God, it’s hard to pick favorites! Spielberg has always been my goal since I started working, and I managed to knock that one off the list pretty quickly! He really is a gem of a human being and he loves his actors, so working with him felt really special. It was a moment in my life I’ll never ever forget.

I would say working with Soderbergh is a blessing and a curse. It’s a blessing because it’s the best set you’ll ever be on, and it’s a curse because it’s the best set you’ll ever be on. Nothing will ever compare. So, fuck you, Steven!

You play Marian in the Otto Bathurst’s upcoming “Robin Hood.” What drew you to this role?

I’ve never been a major Robin Hood fan. I wasn’t born at the right time. But I am a big fan of the actresses that have played Marian. So I just wanted to follow in their footsteps. It’s not every day you get asked to play a role that Cate Blanchett and Audrey Hepburn have played. I’d be an idiot to say no.

The story of Robin Hood has been told onscreen numerous times. Tell me what makes this Marian different and how you prepared for the role.

I think Marian is different in our version because it’s an action film, so she’s not afraid to throw a punch or two. Maybe even an elbow. I tried to get a head butt in there but no one would allow it. She’s not so much a damsel in distress but more a damsel causing stress! And she’s very much involved in the making of Robin. Without her or John, Robin would have never have become ‘The Hood’. I love that Marian is aware that as a woman there are limits to what she can achieve, so she uses the men around her to get the job done. She’s always one step ahead of the boys and she does it all in heels. She’s a bad bitch, basically.

In “Robin Hood,” you do a lot of your own stunts and have said you want to be the next Tom Cruise. Explain why this is so important to you as an actress.

It’s important to me because I’m really good at it! It’s this crazy skill I never knew I had. I guess the Irish in me really shines through when I’m fighting. I’ve always been quite physical; I grew up dancing and I’m not afraid of a scrap, so when you mix the two together, that’s action. I hope I get to do a lot more.

You were one of the few women on set for “Robin Hood.” Tell me what the environment was like on set for you and how it was different from other roles you’ve played.

I was the only woman on set of a big budget action movie and that was an experience no one could have prepared me for. I didn’t realize how much pressure I would feel playing the only female character in this film. It came as a huge shock to me there were different expectations put on me because I was a woman. This was a film being made for men BY men. A male director, a male dominated studio, even a male costume designer. I was told so many times, “this is a film for 14 year old boys” but I kept asking, “what about the 14 year old girls?” What about all the girls that went to see The Hunger Games and Twilight? They buy tickets too. I knew I had a responsibility to give the female audience a Marian that they would be proud of and see themselves in. I couldn’t allow her to be a pretty head on a stick in a push up bra, I know that teenage girls are smarter than that. Marian had to have dignity and stand up for herself. She had to fight back. So I did. I hope I got it right.

Can you tell us anything about your upcoming film projects?

I’m in New Zealand at the moment working on a limited series for the BBC2. It’s based on a book called The Luminaries about a woman who comes to New Zealand during the Gold Rush in the 1860s. The scripts are incredible. I’m really excited about this character and the story we’re telling. It’s another actor’s dream. It should be out next year.

What would be your dream role to play? Dream actor/actress to work with?

I love Julianne Moore. And Amy Adams. I would kill to learn a thing or two from them both.

What would you have pursued had you not decided to become an actress?

Kindergarten teaching.

You’ve described your own style “boyish and punk” in the past. Who or what inspires your style?

I like dressing like a smelly teenage boy. That’s the look. Anything a 14 year old boy wears, I want that in my closet.

I never followed fashion in a religious way. But feeling like myself is really important to me. I like anyone who follows their own individual style and doesn’t care about staying “on trend.” Trendy is boring. Teenage boys are chic.

Who’s your favorite designer to wear on the red carpet?

Chanel. I just feel like me when I wear it. A really expensive version of me.

Tell me about your approach to beauty and self-care.

I am a beauty nutcase. I’ve got to be honest. I may dress like a member of the Lost Boys but my skin is fucking perfect! I love Dr. Lancer’s stuff and Chanel make up. I may also own a Kim Kardashian make up palette but I don’t know if I’m ready to admit that.

Quick Qs

You’re not on set or on the red carpet. Where can we find you?

Drinking wine and binge watching Homeland.

Guilty pleasure?

Kim Kardashian make up!

Favorite spot in New York City (or Brooklyn)?

Central Park. It’s a typical answer but I’ve spent so much time there with my family over the years. I’ve had a lot of great conversations walking through that park.

Favorite movie of all time?

Postcards From The Edge

You’re going on a road trip. Where are you headed and what album are you listening to?

I’ve always wanted to drive coast to coast with my best friend who is a singer/songwriter and film her doing acoustic sets around famous American landmarks. So I guess we’d be listening to Sorcha Richardson.

What’s the first thing you do when you wake up in the morning?

Brush my teeth? I hope that’s everyone’s answer.

What’s the last thing you do before you go to bed?

Brush my teeth!
