DF:   Can you share a moment in your career history that would be the most significant breakthrough which defined your approach to make up for red carpet?

KL: One of the most significant moments I can remember is when I was working with Keira Knightley for the press for the film Atonement many years ago. It is the first time I can remember connecting to all the different dates, events and locations and planning out how the whole tour would fit together. The movie opened the Venice Film Festival and as a part of my research, I went back to look at historical pictures of beautiful women attending the event over the years – I remember thinking how important it was for her looks to be classical and timeless.

DF: And for fashion editorial ?

KL: Fashion is much more of the moment, and I tend to work very instinctively when I work editorially.

DF: Is there any particular shoot, project or client that continually inspires your work?

KL: I am always inspired by my clients. I really enjoy the personal connection and the collaborative nature of my work. I am so fortunate to work alongside some incredibly creative artists and their vision fuels my creativity.

DF: When you confirmed your CHANEL Makeup Artist role with Chanel Beauty what was your first pinch me thought?

KL: It’s been 15 years now, and I am still pinching myself!

DF: What classic Chanel Beauty skincare products do you like to personally use and why?

KL: I am a longtime fan of the CHANEL Hydra Beauty skincare range. I have used the serum with my clients almost religiously since I first began working with CHANEL. My other favorites include CHANEL La Solution 10 de CHANEL, which is an incredibly simple unperfumed moisturizer and CHANEL Huile de Jasmin is always in my personal regimen. It smells like heaven, I use it on my face, décolletage and even in my hair!

DF: Our Contents Beauty shoot will highlight the FW20 makeup collection. Are there any special products that stand out to you in this collection?

KL: This collection is really special – it harkens back to the 90’s with its deep burgundy hues and tawny sculptural shades.

My favorites are:

CHANEL Baume Essentiel in Rosée, a beautiful balm with a rosey hue.

CHANEL Stylo Yeux Waterproof in Romance, a pinky metallic eyeliner.

CHANEL Rouge Allure Ink in Ambiguité – which I actually used as a blush for our shoot.

CHANEL Le Vernis in Interdit – an homage to the original Vamp.

DF: How were you inspired for makeup Design for this cover FW20 shoot?

KL: I am very instinctive when it comes to editorial, I usually feel inspired by the color of a product and then when I see the clothes I will try to marry my inspiration with an outfit. Prior to the shoot I tend to gather images of looks that I think might work as I find that it’s easier to convey an idea when you have a picture – even if that picture is more about a mood. Quite often I won’t end up doing what I have planned and it just comes to me in the moment. I find it easier to let my imagination run wild and just embrace inspiration when it comes to me.

DF: Is there a creative process of experimenting and organizing when you receive Chanel Beauty products for each season?

KL: I like to swatch all the products when they first arrive.  I use watercolor paper which is great as it absorbs the color and also allows me to blend out a product and see what each shade blends away to. Then I will try out any new formulations on myself so that I can understand how they work, and different ways to use them.

DF: What are some of your personal favorite Chanel beauty products that you always use specifically for red carpet makeup?

KL: Two things, CHANEL Ultra Le Teint foundation is a star product for red carpet work, but also it’s just a genius product. It can be used for an immaculate luminous coverage but you can also use it to achieve a really sheer natural look. CHANEL Rouge Allure Velvet Extrême is also an amazing formulation with a rich and potent pigment, it stays put like no other.

CHANEL ‘Beige’ LES EXCLUSIFS DE CHANEL – Eau de Parfum

DF: What is your favorite Chanel fragrance at the moment?

KL: I have been using CHANEL Les Exclusifs de CHANEL, Eau De Cologne almost exclusively for a few years now. It smells so refreshing and clean. It has notes of citrus, neroli and Bergamot.

CHANEL L’Huile Rose is also my current favorite. It smells like freshly cut roses, you can smell the whole rose, it’s really beautiful. It’s a body product but when I wear it people always notice and complement me.
