AISLING FRANCIOSI

discusses her role in
NETFLIX film

THE UNFORGIVABLE

Aisling Franciosi, Irish actress, is well-known for her emotional depth especially in Jennifer Kent’s The Nightingale which many have described as “gut churning” for its depiction of the true horror and brutality of rape. Franciosi, as the lead in the film, described Kent’s character descriptions as “practically dripping through the script,” which translated to a full-fledged multi-dimensional portrayal on screen. Franciosi, however, has a talent for a portrayal that drips through the screen whether or not she holds a main role, which is perhaps why she is a popular choice for darker, emotionally driven projects. Her most recently debuted role as Katherine in Netflix’s The Unforgivable, starring Sandra Bullock, is no different. Katherine is a talented musician who was adopted at a young age after her sister Ruth, played by Sandra Bullock, serves 20 years in prison for a violent crime. In the film, Ruth is released from prison and attempts to re-enter society. Much like Franciosi’s role as Lyanna Stark in Game of Thrones, Katherine lies at the center of much of the story, however her time on screen is brief, so she is masterful at optimizing her performance each frame to express Katherine’s trauma. While Franciosi does not intend on only playing characters with dark emotional trauma, no one can deny her penchant for it. Franciosi tells us about her hope to be in a musical film, describes when she feels most beautiful, and details her role as Katherine. You’ve said that projects really interest you when the characters feel very real, and you are very interested in human interactions and psychology. Since this interview is for our beauty cover, when do you think people are their most beautiful?

I think people are at their most beautiful when they feel comfortable in their own skin. I think it’s really striking because it’s something that comes from within- it can’t be bought.

When do you feel the most beautiful?

When I feel like myself. Even if I’m made up to look like a better version of myself, I still need to feel like me.

In many interviews you’ve described yourself as a goody-two-shoes and have said that you used to struggle a lot with perfectionism. Professionally, do you feel that you still find it difficult to get away from this mentality?

Yeah, when I was a kid I really was a goody-two-shoes. That and the perfectionism changed a bit as I got older and life made it impossible to achieve haha. With my work I can be quite self-critical when I see the finished product but I’m trying to get better at just doing my best and then accepting that it is what it is. Trying…

In that same vein, for roles like The Nightingale, in particular, with a significant level of education required in terms of history, psychology, and trauma, I imagine sometimes it might feel like you could never be educated quite enough. Do you get to a point where you feel like you’ve done all you can to prepare for a role or does it always feel like there’s open space to know more?

There’s always space for learning more. With The Nightingale, I had the privilege of having months and months to research and prep and even then I wanted to do more. On most jobs you don’t have that kind of time so you have to just do what you can and then focus on bringing heart and truth to your performance. At the end of the day that’s what viewers connect with most.

Shifting to a more recent role, congratulations on The Unforgivable, I loved the film! Your character, Katherine, is so interesting because she exists primarily through the perceptions and memories of others- for example, we mostly come to understand her through her adopted sister’s descriptions, her biological sister’s memories, and her parent’s perceptions of her mental health. Is this an element of Katherine that you had in mind when preparing for the role?

I’m glad you enjoyed it! I noted the way other characters described her when I was reading through the script, yes. Those descriptors can help with outward characterisation. But we can be aware of perceptions people have of us and be living a whole different truth in reality. Ultimately, my job is to be Katie and make her feel real to me, that way I can make her feel like her own person rather than just an amalgamation of other people’s perceptions.

Viola Davis has spoken about her emotional scenes with Sandra Bullock in the film, saying that “The deeper you dive and the more honestly you dive, then the catharsis is that you left it all on the floor.” how would you imagine Katherine’s catharsis, or do you think it happened within the film?

I feel Katherine’s catharsis is only just beginning when we see her at the end of the film. The questions she has had about her past and her difficulties in dealing with her confusion mean that she has a lot to work through. I found myself imagining how interesting it would be to play her in the aftermath of our movie’s story. I think, after the high of finding out the truth, her journey would be complicated.

Out of all of the roles you’ve played, have you had moments portraying a character that have felt like a personal catharsis for you?

Yes. Playing Clare in The Nightingale was hugely cathartic for me. I have always been one to bottle things up emotionally and on that film I just let everything spill out. I was so exhausted by the end of the shoot, but it was liberating. It took me a while to get back to myself but it also taught me I should really find better ways of dealing with “negative” emotions.

Without giving anything away, do you think your portrayal as Katherine changed with you being aware of the twist in the story or would the trauma have translated similarly, in your opinion?

I mean, Katie is not aware of the twist in a conscious way but she lived the truth of it and so, on a subconscious level, she knows. She is dealing with the trauma of it in her dreams and memories. So I felt that knowing the twist wasn’t a hindrance in terms of how I played her.

You’ve played a few roles in which your character is a talented musician like in The Unforgivable and The Fall. You’ve also said that you would love to be in a musical film. What do you love most about music and how it relates to a person’s character?

I just love that music affects/reflects our moods and our emotions. What a powerful thing! And I love that our taste in music and our musicality is so personal. The added layer of characterisation of finding a singing voice or quality specific for a particular character is something I enjoy.

I know you have a lot of projects coming out over the next year or so. What are you most looking forward to at the moment?

I shot a beautiful film called God’s Creatures earlier this year in Donegal with Emily Watson, Paul Mescal and Toni O’Rourke amongst other great Irish actors. It was a wonderful experience. It was also my first time working with two directors (both women- Anna Holmes and Saela Davis!) and they made it a dream.
