SEVERANCE

Adam Scott calls his starring role as Mark in Apple TV+ Severance, “a culmination of everything I’ve learned over the years.” Scott is often recognized for his highly revered comedic roles, as fans bring up the Catalina wine mixer from Step Brothers, calzones and claymations from Parks and Recreation and “are we having fun yet” from Party Down; When we first hear his peppy robotic voice as “innie” Mark right before he sobs in the car as “outie” Mark in the first few minutes of Severance, it’s almost as if the audience has undergone a severance procedure of our own as we are forced to divide our memories of calzones and claymations from what we see on the screen. This is not to say that we have never seen Adam Scott in an emotionally heavy role like this, however it is to say that his role in Severance might be his most phenomenal in-depth work yet. The series, favored by audiences and critics alike, follows Adam Scott as Mark who has undergone the severance procedure which severs his work life in the eerie monochromatic green Lumon Industries from his personal life in which he recently suffered the loss of his wife to a car accident. He essentially portrays two separate characters that begin to converge as the series progresses. In our interview with him, Scott reflects on Season 1, discusses his expectations for Season 2, and details his upcoming projects!

I absolutely loved Severance, but I’m doubly excited because the first show I binge watched during the pandemic was Big Little Lies and loved you in that too. Is there anything you’re binge watching recently?

I’ve been watching We Own This City, Slow Horses, Pachinko, and Winning Time—all great.

I read that you used to look forward to watching The Twilight Zone at night in your childhood. I imagine as an actor you must run into situations that feel like you’re in the twilight zone. When have you felt like this?

Working with Patricia Arquette, John Turturro, and Christoper Walken was certainly surreal in a Twilight Zone-ish way, but with a happier ending.

I’ve read in other interviews that when you were just getting started in the industry, you would take anything you could get. At this point in your career, I would imagine that you’ve become somewhat selective. What goes into choosing which roles you want to accept?

I look for stuff I feel I could bring something unique to, or enhance. If I can think of someone who could do it better, it’s probably not for me. Also, more and more, I just look for stuff I’d like to watch.

I know you’ve said that Severance felt like the role you had been waiting for. You were genuinely absolutely fantastic in it. Since Season 1 has now ended, and the reception has been so overwhelmingly positive, how do you reflect on your experience working on it?

First of all, thank you! The experience was similar to the role itself: a culmination of everything I’ve learned over the years—I felt I had to deploy it all to get it done. It was challenging, exhilarating, frustrating, fun, rewarding. Ben [Stiller] was instrumental—I depended on him a lot and trusted him completely: if nothing else, I was smart enough to do this.

Severance is confirmed to return for a second season which is so exciting because of how we left off on Season 1. What are you most excited to explore as Mark next season?

Mark has come to realizations both inside Lumon and out. I’m excited about where these realizations lead him.

Moving into what else you have coming up, I can’t wait for the Party Down revival! I know you can’t give anything away, but is there anything you can tell us from working on the revival?

It was a blast, of course. Getting to see the whole gang again every day was so much fun—it sounds dumb but it’s true: it felt as if not a day had past. Everyone is so funny, and our new cast members are so great. I can’t wait for everyone to see it.

In the spirit of Party Down, and the original’s many “are we having fun yets,” is there anything people bring up to you all the time when they meet you? I have to tell you, I’ve seen a plethora of Tom Cruise comparisons from your appearance in Severance.

It’s usually one or more of the following: Catalina Wine Mixer, calzone, claymation, or Are We Having Fun Yet.

It was also recently announced that you and your wife Naomi Scott will be working alongside Don Cheadle and Karyn Smith-Forge to produce Quitman 10+2, a series based on the 2010 arrests of several Black Board of Education members who were being accused of voter fraud after they successfully flipped the majority-white school board. Can you tell us a little bit more about this project? It is a story that definitely needs to be known.

I first heard about the Quitman 10+2 reading Stacey Abrams’ book Our Time Is Now while preparing to interview her in 2020. I then dug a bit deeper and the story just kept getting more and more absurd and infuriating. We’re super excited to be working with Don & Karyn on bringing the story to TV.
